Chile 1817-So FJ 8 escudos
The specimen shown was lot 1364 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,495. It was one of a series struck 1811-17 during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It bears the bust of Charles IV with Ferdinand's name, which is odd, as the Charles IV bust was never used when he was actually king. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold. Two overdates, 1817/6 and 1817/8, are recorded for the date. The catalog description[1] noted, "1817 FJ 8 escudos. Santiago mint. AU-58 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous medium gold, uniformly attractive, natural flaw at base of reverse. Highly attractive. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
Recorded mintage: 11,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 26.56 grams, 38.10 mm diameter.
