Chile 1817-So FJ 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 820 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, bust ½ real, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1817 FJ, no dot between ET and IND, NGC MS 64 (Colección Val y Mexía Label). Choice luster with lovely toning and very sharp details, no visible wear or marks, second finest in NGC census behind a single MS 66 (variety not mentioned). Note: this is the final colonial issue; for an example of the first issue of the Republic (same date), see lot 1946 in this auction. Pedigreed to the Val y Mexia Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1808-17 in Santiago, Chile, during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages and this type is scarce but available. The bust of Ferdinand VII appears on the two reales, eight reales and eight escudos. The FI assayer was probably an error for the usual FJ.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
