Ponterio sale 168, lot 50375

This specimen was lot 50375 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $774. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHILE. 1/2 Real, 1833-I. NGC AU-58. Darkly toned." This "volcano" half real, struck 1833-34, accompanies a similar one, two and eight reales struck in the same period. The bold design has always been popular with collectors. In 1838 the condor type was introduced (KM 98.1).

Recorded mintage: 14,000.

Specification: 1.70 g, 0.902 fine silver, 17.5 mm diameter.
