Chile 1833-So I escudo
This specimen was lot 30436 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,513.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Escudo 1833-I, XF45 NGC. A highly attractive example with aged toning and luster in the legends. The design features are boldly struck on both sides. High grade examples of these smaller denominations are very elusive! Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." This "crossed flags" type was struck in Santiago, Chile, 1824-34. It was succeeded by the "hand on book" type (KM 99, struck 1838 only) and a "standing liberty" design (KM 101, struck 1839-51). The SCWC records the weight of this coin as 3.3 g; earlier colonial one escudos were nominally 3.38 g. None of the recorded mintages are large.
Recorded mintage: 2,620.
Specification: 3.3 g, 0.875 fine gold, .093 troy oz AGW, 19 mm diameter.
