Chile 1833-So I 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 1071 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, gold 4 escudos, 1833 I, rare, NGC AU details / cleaned. Lightly red-toned with small spots of encrustation and streaks of blue, a few light marks plus rim-bump but minimal evidence of cleaning, key date from a tiny mintage of just 321 coins." Four escudos of the Republic of Chile come in three types: the crossed flags type (KM 87, struck 1824-34, shown here), the hand on book type and the standing liberty type (KM 103, struck 1839-41). Five dates exist of this scarce type, 1824-26 and 1833-34. The crossed flags design was also used on one, two and eight escudos in the period after indenpendence.
