Chile 1833-So I 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 53069 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1833-So I. Santiago Mint. PCGS AU-58. A beautiful and conditionally challenging type, the present example delivers a crisp and sharp strike, with strong allure being retained throughout. The luster glows and shimmers in the light, with a nearly unending appeal that is seldom interrupted by actual handling or contact. A piece that will quite assuredly receive much attention." This type was struck 1818-34 in moderate quantities but increased demand has made this coin expensive. This type was replaced in 1835 by the "hand on book" type minted 1835-38. The crossed flag design appears on gold one, two and four escudos of the period.

Specification: 27 g, 0.875 fine gold, 37 mm diameter.
