Chile 1824-So I 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 30440 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,233.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 4 Escudos 1824-I, Fine 12 NGC. Attractively toned and original with well-struck features and evenly worn surfaces. Struck with the unlisted 'I' assayer initial and quite rare as such. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." Four escudos of the Republic of Chile come in three types: the crossed flags type (KM 87, struck 1824-26 and 1833-34, shown here), the hand on book type (KM 95) and the standing liberty type (KM 103, struck 1839-41). All are rare and expensive. The SCWC records the weight of this coin as 13.5 g; earlier colonial four escudos were nominally 13.54 g.
