Chile 1834-So I 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 833 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, "volcano" ½ real, 1834/3 I, NGC MS 62 (Colección Val y Mexía Label), finest and only example in NGC census. Beautifully rainbow toned over luster, choice strike with rims almost full, a couple small marks only, apparently quite scarce as we cannot find any others auctioned in recent years. Pedigreed to the Val y Mexia Collection." This "volcano" half real, struck 1833-34, accompanies a similar one, two and eight reales struck in the same period. The bold design has always been popular with collectors. In 1838 the condor type was introduced (KM 98.1).
