This specimen was lot 984 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, 'volcano' peso, 1834 I, NGC MS 62, 'top pop.' Brightly lustrous (rare grade, tied with two others for finest in the NGC census), with patches of very light rainbow toning, somewhat rare without the usual Philippines countermark." This "volcano peso," one of the most popular South American crowns, was struck 1817-34 in some numbers but the majority of survivors are dated 1817. Circulated specimens are available for a price but uncirculated pieces are rare. The volcano design also appears on silver half, one and two reales of 1833-34.

Recorded mintage: 43,000 including assayer IJ.

Specification: 27 g, 0.902 fine silver, 39.5 mm diameter.
