Chile 1817-So FJ 2 reales
This specimen was lot 71429 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 2 Reales, 1817-So FJ. Santiago Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS MS-62. This beautiful Mint State silver minor displays rich mottled toning and impressively lustrous fields. In addition to displaying sharp detail as expected for the grade, this piece is well-struck and free from the die or planchet problems that frequently appear in this issue. Only a few scattered marks in the fields attest to this piece having been handled at all. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1812-17 in Santiago, Chile, during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages and this type is not rare. The bust of Ferdinand VII appears on the two reales, eight reales and eight escudos. The Spanish were expelled in 1817 but the first republican 2 reales did not appear until 1834. Some colonial types were restruck by the republicans during the early 1820's; it is not known if this denomination was included. Assayer FJ is listed for 1803-17.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver.
