This specimen is from a type was struck in Mexico City 1814-21, supserseding the imaginary bust of Ferdinand VII used 1809-14. It is listed as common but, with the exception of the 1821, does not turn up as often as one might think. A few Iturbide one reales were struck in 1822 but the republican cap-and-ray type did not commence until 1825. It is possible more 1821's were struck in later years.
