from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 1608

This specimen was lot 1608 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chihuahua, Mexico, bust 8 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1817RP, struck over a Chihuahua cast bust 8 reales no date (1810-13), assayer RP, with control marks. Broad-flan XF with typically crude details including what can only be described as a mutant bust (new smaller bust over earlier larger bust), with hair and chin but no face, legends and rims mostly bold, light toning, central corrosion (as made) on reverse." The Chihuahua mint was opened in 1810 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It made cast eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII until it received minting machinery in 1814. This type was issued 1815-22 but none are common. Both specimens appear to be struck over earlier cast eight reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW, this specimen 28.08 grams.
