Mexico 1818/7-Mo JJ 4 reales
This specimen was lot 9748 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $258.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1818/7-JJ. RARE date. PCGS VG-10." This specimen displays the standard bust of Ferdinand VII used in Mexico 1816-21. The four reales is the scarcest of the silver denominations and the "standard bust" of Ferdinand VII is a scarce type for the denomination, even in low grade. By 1818, the rebels had been almost completely crushed by the royalists but in 1821, alarmed by liberal tendencies in Spain, the royalist leaders switched sides and allied with the rebels to declare independence.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.896 fine silver, .390 troy oz AGW.
