SB1123-70222r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70222 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. War of Independence. Cast Silver 8 Reales, 1813. NGC AU-50. KM-235. A handsome circulated example of this popular and SCARCE issue in cast silver. Well-defined relative to the typical example and pleasingly problem-free, the surfaces toned a deep walnut-brown hue." Due to the hand cut dies, Morelos' eight reales come in many varieties (KM 233.2, 233.2a, 233.3, 233.4, KM 234, 235 (shown here), 237, 238, KM 248 and 249). The vast majority were copper; Morelos promised to redeem these in silver after independence but his capture, trial and execution by the Spanish put an end to that. This type was struck 1812-13 and is scarce. It is not priced above VF.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-235.
