This specimen was lot 45321 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. War of Independence. Moneda Provisional. 2 Reales, 1812. Zacatecas Mint. Ferdinand VII. VERY GOOD Details. While well worn, this example of a seldom seen type is identifiable as to date and type. Note the denomination on the obverse." This specimen is one of a series minted 1811-12 in Zacatecas during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. The date is rare and nice examples may not exist. In 1814, Zacatecas adopted a more conventional portrait design (KM 92.1). The Zacatecas mint closed in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15456, KM-188.
