This specimen was lot 24349 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Guadalajara. 2 Reales, 1812-GaMR. NGC GOOD-6. VERY RARE date. Weakly struck at centers as is typical for the issue. Bold full four digit date, king's name and ordinal, mint mark, denomination and assayers letters. Despite the crude manufacture a wholesome problem free example sure to excite the specialist of the War of Independence. Lovely old envelope tone." The Guadalajara mint was opened by the royalists during the War of Independence and struck half, one, two, four and eight reales in silver and four and eight escudos in gold, the only branch mint to do so during the war. Two reales dated 1812, 1814, 1815 and 1821 are known, all scarce.
