The first specimen was lot 34276 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Reales, 1812-M IJ. Madrid Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-66. Tied with one other for the finest certified, this miraculous survivor seems to surpass even the lofty quality standards set for the MS-66 grade, with surfaces that appear free of blemishes and a strike that has rendered every detail of the design in bold, breathtaking clarity. Pale gold tone that deepens slightly and adds a reddish hue on Ferdinand's bust imparts a unique character that makes this minor issue hard to forget. From the Avrabanel Collection." The second specimen was lot 1665 in Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-Sale 75 (London, October 2020), where it sold for £100. The catalog description noted, "Spain, Kingdom. Fernando VII AR 2 Reales. Madrid mint, 1812 IJ. • FERDIN • VII • DEI • GRATIA •, laureate and draped bust right; date below / HISPANIARUM • REX •, crowned coat-of-arms of Castille and Leon; denomination and mintmarks in fields. Very Fine. From a private English collection." This type was struck in Madrid 1812-14 by Ferdinand's partisans under the protection of the British army. Control of the capital changed hands several times during this stage of the Peninsular War. In 1814, Napoleon gave up and withdrew all French troops from Spain.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
