Spain 1812-C CI 2 escudos
The first specimen was lot 2759 in Goldberg sale 103 (Los Angeles, February 2018), where it sold for $928.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain. 2 Escudos, 1812-CI (Cadiz). Ferdinand VII. Laureate bust right. Reverse: Crowned arms. Reflective fields with brilliant mint luster. Rare. NGC graded Uncirculated, Details (Surface Hairlines)." This Spanish two escudos was struck at the Cadiz mint in 1811. The type was struck 1811-14 as French troops occupied the rest of Spain. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. The mint was moved to Cadiz in 1811 and did not return to Seville until 1815.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, .875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.
