Spain 1811-C CI 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 7423 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $5,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 8 Escudos, 1811-CI. Cadiz Mint. One-year type. Lustrous NGC XF-45." Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. The mint was moved to Cadiz in 1811 and did not return to Seville until 1815. This issue was followed by a "bare head" type minted at Cadiz 1813-14 and at Madrid 1814-20; all are scarce. The last coin struck to this specification was the 320 reales of 1822-23 (KM 566).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .7616 troy oz AGW.
