This specimen was lot 23533 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1811-FJ, AU55 NGC, imaginary military bust, nicely struck details with considerable mint luster, scarce in this pleasing grade." Charles IV abdicated in 1808 and Ferdinand VII was imprisoned by Napoleon; for 1808-11 the Santiago mint used an imaginary bust of the king. On his release in 1811, the Santiago mint adopted the bust of Charles IV for the eight escudos (KM 78) where the other Latin American mints used the "proper bust" of Ferdinand. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.

Recorded mintage: 44,000 (including KM 78).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16398, Fr-28, KM 72.
