Chile 1811-So 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 1839 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $238. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, 1/4 real, Ferdinand VII, 1811, NGC XF details / environmental damage, scratches. Nicely detailed with hints of luster, some old scratches on reverse covered by mottled dark multicolor toning. NGC #4723950-006." This specimen is one of a series struck 1796-1818 in Santiago, Chile, during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages and this type is not rare. This particular date is recorded as having been struck by the patriot regime after independence. A hoard of 1817's is known and those appear in high grade with some frequency.
