Guatemala 1811-G 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 1350 in Áureo y Calicó sale 346 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €300 (about US$396 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1811. Fernando VII. Guatemala. 1/4 de real. Escasa. MBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VII, quarter real of 1811, Guatemala mint. Scarce, about very fine.)"
This specimen is one of a series struck 1808-21 at Guatemala during the reign of Ferdinand VII. Catalog number KM 59 is used for those minted for Charles IV but they are otherwise the same. The type is not rare but nice specimens always bring a premium. Guatemala avoided the violence that devastated Mexico during the war of independence but joined Iturbide's empire in 1821.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.812 fine silver, this specimen 0,89 g.
