The first specimen was lot 51393 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1812-So. Santiago Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-64. Variety with dots before and after date. Although die rust is evident across both sides, this survivor has escaped nearly all evidence of circulation. The fields glisten with luster and the devices appear almost as-made. From the EMO Collection. Privately purchased from Freeman Craig." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.

Recorded mintage: 71,000.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14997, EMO-875.1 (Plate coin); KM-73: Cal-303.
