Aureo sale 238, lot 498

The first specimen was lot 498 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 406 euro (about US$644 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1812. Santiago. FJ. 8 reales. Rayitas. Buen ejemplar. Rara. MBC+. (eight reales of 1812, Santiago mint. Light marks, nice example, rare, choice very fine.)"

The standard bust of Ferdinand was first introduced at the Santiago mint for 1812. The assayer FJ appears for 1803-17.

Recorded mintage: 307,000.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
