Aureo sale 238, lot 221

This specimen was lot 221 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, Spain, November 2011), where it sold for 280 euro (about US$444 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1811. Madrid. AI. 20 reales. Águila grande. Pátina. Escasa. MBC+. (Twenty reales of 1811, Madrid mint, large eagle. Toned, scarce, choice very fine.)"

This Spanish twenty reales de vellon was struck in Madrid during the regime of José Napoleon, the French emperor's older brother. The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, set 20 reales = 1 peso instead of the traditional eight. This type is also known from Barcelona and Seville. The coins minted using that standard were not marked in any way different from the concurrent eight reales standard, a source of confusion for collectors today, It must have been a major irritant for the inhabitants of the time.
