CNG Lissner collection, lot 901

This specimen was lot 901 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $786.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Reino de España. Guerra de la Independencia Española. Fernando VII. Prisoniero, 1808-1813. AR 4 Reales. Valencia mint. Sixto Giber Polo, assayer. Dated 1811 V SG. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. A beautiful lustrous brilliant uncirculated specimen. Just a few spots of patina on the obverse. Only one graded higher of the date and this is the highest in a spread between 1774-1849. Purchased from Frank Lapa, October 1970." The type was struck 1809-11 as French troops occupied the rest of Spain. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight reales, Spanish four reales are more available than eight reales. The Valencia mint struck two and four reales 1809-12 and some four reales de vellon in 1823.
