Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1594

This specimen was lot 1594 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 290 € (about US$376 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1810. Joseph-Napoleon. Madrid. AI. 4 reales. Light die lines. Nice. Some of its original luster. Rare in this condition. EBC-/EBC [nearly extremely fine]." This type was struck 1809-13 as French troops occupied Madrid. Unlike the traditional four reales, which was half a peso, this coin was a fifth of a peso. It is listed fairly cheaply in circulated condition but does not appear often.
