Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2805

This specimen was lot 2805 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 60 € (about US$78 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1810. José Napoleón. Segovia. 8 maravedís. Rayitas. Ex Áureo & Calicó 24/10/2013, nº 690. BC+/MBC- [fine to very fine]." The Spanish mints feature large issues of a variety of copper coins which did not circulate at all in the Spanish American colonies. In the predecimal system which obtained until 1847, 34 maravedis = one real of silver. This eight maravedis was worth 1/34 of a dollar; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Segovia 1809-13 during the short, unhappy reign of king Joseph, Napoleon's brother. The type is not rare but scarcer than the eight maravedis of Carlos IV or Fernando VII.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specifications: copper, this specimen 10,91 g.

Catalog reference: KM 450, AC. 1, Cayón-14653.
