Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 34270

This specimen was lot 34270 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "The Coin Chosen to Illustrate the Type in Numismática Española, SPAIN. 4 Reales, 1809-C SF. Cataluna Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC AU-55. Perfect for the type, this RARE mint issue displays an exceptional strike with attractive gray tone that contains lovely iridescent qualities. No marks of any significance are seen, giving this coin the appearance that rivals that of many choice Mint State coins. From the Avrabanel Collection." This scarce type was struck 1809-10 and 1814. The Catalunya mint was moved several times as French armies advanced and ended up at Palma de Mallorca in the Balearics, protected by the British navy. The Cadiz mint also used the C mintmark but had different assayers' initials (CI).
