Barcelona 1809 2 1/2 pesetas

This specimen was lot 535 in Soler y Llach's January, 2010, sale where it sold for 221 euros (about US$377 with buyers' fees). The catalog description noted,

"OCUPACIÓN NAPOLEÓNICA de CATALUNYA. 2 1/2 Pesetas. 1809. BARCELONA. MBC-" (French occupation of Catalonia, 2½ pesetas of 1809, Barcelona mint, about Very Fine).

This silver coin was issued from Barcelona during the French occupation for use there and in Catalonia. It was struck 1808-14 and accompanied by a silver one peseta and five pesetas, the first coins denominated in pesetas. In the local currency, five pesetas = one peso; this coin would have traded for a Latin American four reales. This coin is not common. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848.

Recorded mintage: unknown but this is the most common date.
