This specimen was lot 1039 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. José Napoleon, 1808-1813. 80 Reales de vellon, 1809 M AI. Madrid. Bare head l. of Napoleon's brother, seated on the Spanish throne in place of Fernando VII. Rv. 7-fold Arms including Bonaparte eagle. An historic two-year type. Light adjustment marks seen on the truncation of the bust. Advanced die cracks make this an interesting coin to view up close. EF-45 (NGC)." This is the introductory issue of this denomination, which was struck at Madrid 1809-10 for Napoleon's brother Joseph using the weight standard of a two escudos of the old regime. Other denominations, ranging from one real de vellon to 320 reales, accompanied this issue. When the Bourbons were restored, they continued to strike this denomination 1822-48.
