ex Soler y Llach

This specimen was lot 543 in Soler y Llach's January, 2010, sale where it did not sell. The catalog description noted,

"OCUPACIÓN OCUPACIÓN NAPOLEÓNICA de CATALUNYA. 5 Pesetas. 1813. BARCELONA. (Pequeñas rayitas). MUY ESCASA. EBC." (French occupation of Catalonia, five pesetas of 1813, Barcelona mint, small scratches, very scarce, Extremely Fine).

This silver coin was issued from Barcelona during the French occupation for use there and in Catalonia. It was struck 1808-14 and accompanied by a silver one peseta and two and a half pesetas, the first coins denominated in pesetas. In the local currency, five pesetas = one peso; this coin would have traded for a Latin American eight reales. This coin is not common. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848.

Recorded mintage: unknown but this is the second rarest date after the 1814.

Specification: silver.
