This Spanish two escudos was struck at the Madrid mint in 1813. The type was struck 1813-14 as Wellington's troops drove the French out of Spain. Unlike the Latin American mints which concentrated on eight escudos, the most common Spanish gold coins of the period were the half escudo and two escudos. Production of the standard bust two escudos resumed at Madrid 1814-33. Two other assayers are listed for 1813, IG and IJ, both rarer than the GJ shown here.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
