Aureo sale 232, lot 252

The specimen shown was lot 252 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, Spain, March 2011), where it sold for €2,050 (about US$3,383 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1813. Madrid. RN. 10 reales. Preciosa pátina con restos de brillo original. Rara y más así. EBC-. (Ten reales of 1813, Madrid mint, beautiful patina with most of the original luster. Rare, nearly extremely fine.)

This type was issued at Madrid 1809-13 and is a rare denomination, designed to compete with the traditional four reales. The twenty reales de vellon introduced by José Napoleon was the favored denomination in the 1820's until 1849.

Recorded mintage: 135,000.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
