Aureo sale 269, lot 353

This specimen was lot 353 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €220 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1812. José Napoleón. Madrid. RN. 10 reales. Un sólo mundo entre las columnas. Escasa. MBC-. (Spain, Joseph Napoleon, ten reales of 1812, Madrid mint, variety with only one globe between the pillars, scarce, about very fine.)"

This type was issued at Madrid 1809-13 and is a rare denomination, designed to compete with the traditional four reales. The twenty reales de vellon introduced by José Napoleon was the favored denomination in the 1820's until 1849.

Recorded mintage: 490,000 (including assayer AI).

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW, this specimen 13,37 g.
