Spain 1814-M GJ 2 escudos Fr-309a
The second specimen was lot 34257 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description[2] noted, "SPAIN. 2 Escudos, 1814/3-M GJ. Madrid Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-63. Seemingly conservatively graded, this charming type, which displays Ferdinand VII in military uniform, exhibits sharp detailing on both sides with a reverse that is pristine and an obverse that shows no major handling. Sparking luster emboldens the appearance further and ensures the quality. A great type, and with only one graded finer, a coin that is sure to appeal to those obsessed with quality. From the Avrabanel Collection." This type was struck 1813-14 in Madrid after Wellington had evicted the French. In 1814, Napoleon released Ferdinand from captivity and his standard bust was used on the coinage thereafter. This overdate is not mentioned in the SCWC.
