Áureo y Calicó sale 391, lot 1474

This specimen was lot 1474 in Aureo y Calicó sale 391 (Barcelona, June 2022), where it sold for €150 (about US$189 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1814. Fernando VII. Catalunya (Mallorca). SF. 2 reales. Sin punto entre los ensayadores. Acuñación algo floja. Parte de brillo original. Rara y más así. MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VII, two reales of 1814, Mallorca mint. Without dot between the assayer's initials. Weakly struck, some luster, rare thus. Choice very fine.)"

The Catalunya mint was a temporary mint set up to produce coins for the supporters of Ferdinand VII. It moved about as French soldiers attempted to close it down and ended up in Mallorca in the Balearics, protected by the British navy. Two reales were struck there 1811-14 among other denominations.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.812 fine silver, .157 troy oz ASW, this specimen 5,72 g.
