Barcelona 1812 5 pesetas rev Heritage 3024-25554.jpg

This specimen was lot 25554 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Barcelona. Joseph Napoleon 5 Pesetas 1812, MS64 NGC, well struck with a beautiful mixture of gray, olive and muted gold color atop apparent underlying brilliance. A stunningly original example of immense quality and the finest graded example for the date at NGC." This silver coin was issued from Barcelona during the French occupation for use there and in Catalonia. It was struck 1808-14 and accompanied by a silver one peseta and two and a half pesetas, the first coins denominated in pesetas. In the local currency, five pesetas = one peso; this coin would have traded for a Latin American eight reales. This coin is not common. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
