This type with the imaginary bust was struck in Mexico 1808-12; the succeeding type with the "standard bust" of Ferdinand VII is much scarcer even tho it was struck over a longer span of years. This specimen was lot 22311 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1812 JJ, MS61 NGC. Fully brilliant, with light marks, and an above average strike for the type."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
