Aureo sale 238, lot 377

This specimen was lot 377 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1812. México. HJ. 8 reales. Limpiada. Escasa. (MBC+). (eight reales of 1811, Mexico City mint. cleaned, scarce, choice very fine.)"

The year 1812 saw assayers HJ (1809-14) and JJ (1812-21). Assayer JJ is common while HJ is scarce. Later years are slightly scarcer as the spread of the war of independence curtailed the flow of bullion to the mint.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
