Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70211
SB1123-70211r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70211 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. LCV. War of Independence. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1812). Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-25; Countermark: VF Details. Royalist 'LCV' countermark on 1812 Sombrerete 8 Reales (KM-177). This 'LCV' countermark, already quite rare, is otherwise unlisted and unknown on a Sombrerete host coin. As such, this piece is undoubtedly EXTREMELY RARE. The countermark appears on the obverse of the host, easily distinguishable though the final character is missing due to an uneven strike. The reverse was struck off-center, and much of the plain side exhibits numerous adjustment marks. Free of cleaning or unsightly damage, the coin bears a lovely deep charcoal tone throughout.

The "LCV" countermark stands for 'Las Cajas de Veracruz', and is usually encountered on provisional issues of Zacatecas. Their purpose was to validate this provisional coinage for circulation throughout New Spain. To account for the crude nature of the coinage and encourage broad market acceptance, each coin was weighed and retariffed with a stamp, if found to be underweight, or adjusted, if found to be overweight. Given the many planchet adjustments seen on this example, it's clear that it was struck overweight by the Sombrerete mint."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-unlisted.
