This specimen was lot 41166 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Sombrerete. War of Independence. 8 Reales, 1811. Ferdinand VII. PCGS FINE-15 Gold Shield. Royalist issue type. Despite its obvious crudeness, an incredibly charming example of the type, with a partial large circular punch on one side, which is typical of the type, and small punches that remain bold on the other, revealing both the date and mentioning Vargas, whose authority these types were struck under." Sombrerete, in the state of Zacatecas, was in a rich mining area and had a local mint 1810-12 which struck half, one, two, four and eight reales, of which the eight reales are the best known. The town is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This type was struck 1810-11 along with KM 177 (without countermarks) for 1811-12.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15847, KM-176; Cal-Type 170 #648.
