Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70243
SB1123-70243r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70243 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Chilpanzingo and Morelos. War of Independence. 8 Reales, ND (1811-14). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Fine Details. Morelos (Type A) and Congress of Chilpanzingo (Type A) countermarks on cast 1808-Mo TH 8 Reales of Charles IV (KM-109). Despite a noted cleaning, this dually-countermarked insurgent issue retains a lovely matte gray color throughout. Excellent detail on both of the countermarks as well as the seldom-seen host coin ensure that this example stands out among others of the type." As the War of Independence ground on and the armies degenerated into gangs of bandits, coins were countermarked and counter-countermarked as a form of propaganda. The SCWC lists this combination on Mexico City hosts of 1806-07.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-284 (host date unlisted).
