Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70256
SB1123-70256r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70256 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. L.V.S. War of Independence. 2 Reales, ND (1811-14). PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, Fine Details. cf. KM-C286 (for countermark). Initials L.V.S. in script countermark struck on cast 1807-Mo TH 2 Reales of Charles IV (KM-91). This countermark is seldom seen in any form, but found unaccompanied by any other countermark as in this example it is unlisted and EXTREMELY RARE. The mark is seen on the obverse of the rather crudely-produced host, showing quite clear and distinguishable detail. The surfaces are deep steel-blue in color and show minor encrustation, but are otherwise well-preserved considering its cast manufacture. A highly intriguing piece worthy of close consideration from specialist collectors." As the War of Independence ground on and the armies degenerated into gangs of bandits, coins were countermarked and counter-countermarked as a form of propaganda. This sale offered this countermark on a four reales and an eight reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C286 (this countermark on an 8 reales).
