Aureo sale 238, lot 376

This specimen was lot 376 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 1,100 euro (about US$1,744 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1811. México. HJ. 8 reales. Primer año de busto laureado. Ligerísimos golpecitos en canto. Brillo original. Bella. Rara así. EBC+. (eight reales of 1811, Mexico City mint, first year of proper bust. A few minor rim nicks, lustrous, handsome, rare thus, choice extremely fine.)"

The year 1811 saw the transition from the "imaginary bust" to the "standard bust" (shown here) used 1811-21. Both are common. Later years are slightly scarcer as the spread of the war of independence curtailed the flow of bullion to the mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15840, Cal. 546, KM 111.
