Aureo sale 238, lot 371

This specimen was lot 371 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 170 euro (about US$270 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1810/09. México. HJ. 8 reales. Busto imaginario. Plata agria. Escasa. (EBC-). (eight reales of 1810/09, Mexico City mint, imaginary bust. Planchet flaws, scarce, nearly extremely fine.)"

Assayer TH appears in 1803-10 and HJ for 1809-14. No premium is awarded to the overdate. This type is common altho TH is rare. The year 1810 saw Hidalgo raise the "Grito de Dolores," the first rebellion against Spanish rule which would evolve into the war of independence.
