SB223-72062r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72062 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Zacatecas. War of Independence. Real, 1811. Zacatecas Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Despite the noted cleaning, this interesting provisional type offers great originality. The unusual 'provincial' bust type is well-presented and surrounded by subtle amber toning. Though showing some partial weakness, the reverse legend and coat of arms are sharp and attractive. Ex: Ponterio Sale 153 (03/2010), Lot # 7403." This type was struck 1811-12 along with KM-184 and KM-183. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the Mexican War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. The Zacatecas mint, opened in 1811, closed in 1905.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.903 fine silver.
