Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70210

This specimen was lot 70210 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. VTIL. War of Independence. 2 Reales, "1181" (1811). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details; Countermark: EF Details. VTIL countermark applied to the obverse of a 1811 Zacatecas L.V.O. 2 Reales (KM-187). A most interesting Mexican revolutionary issue, with a clear countermark and much appeal, despite the noted cleaning." The SCWC shows this countermark combined with "J.M.L". It also appears on various 8 reales (KM A298, 290.2, 291, 290.1).
