Aureo sale 238, lot 556

This specimen was lot 556 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1811. Zacatecas. 8 reales. Leyenda: Moneda Provisional. Ejemplar muy digno. Rara así. (MBC). (Eight reales of 1811, Zacatecas mint, provisional mint. Worth example, rare thus, very fine.)"

Alarmed by the outbreak of the war of independence, local officials opened a mint in Zacatecas so that silver ore would not have to be transported over bandit infested mountain trails. This provisional type was struck 1811-12 and is rare in nice condition as most were poorly made. It replaced the "LVO" type issued 1810-11, likely in response to complaints from Mexico City about the absence of the king's portrait.
