Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70262
SB1123-70262r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70262 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Morelos/Chilpanzingo/LVS. War of Independence. 4 Reales, ND (1811-14). PCGS VG-8. cf. KM-C286 (for countermarks). Morelos Type A, Chilpanzingo Type A, and script "LVS" countermarks on a cast 1805 4 Reales of Charles IV. While these three countermarks occasionally appear together on 8 Reales host coins, it is RARE and unlisted on this 4 Reales host. The coin has seen plenty of circulation before and after the application of the stamps, but it retains a fully present host date and easily identifiable features on each of the countermarks. The reverse is muddled from the repeated strikes on the obverse, but the coin is free from the scratches or environmental damage often seen on coins of the period." As the War of Independence ground on and the armies degenerated into gangs of bandits, coins were countermarked and counter-countermarked as a form of propaganda. This sale also offered an eight reales with the same combination of countermarks.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C286 (assigned to the eight reales with these countermarks).
